Look! I Am Writing is a workbook for beginning writers. It was created to help children begin writing while developing their phonics skills. This book is perfect for emergent writers who can recognize the letters of the alphabet and the sounds they make. Give your children the skills and confidence they need to soar in school by following the steps below.
Step 1. Teach Your Child the ABC Song
Sing the ABC song with your child slowly at first to make sure she is pronouncing each letter correctly. Have your child point to each letter as she sings. Practice the ABC song until your child is able to sing and recite her ABCs without help. (Use pages 2-3 and the letter cards at the back of the book to practice.)
Step 2. Practice the Letter Sounds
Your child should be able to point to each letter and identify the sound it makes. (Use pages 2-3 and the letter cards at the back of the book to practice. See example in the box at the right.)
Step 3. Start Writing!
Have your child practice one letter per day.
- First, review the steps needed to create the letter.
- Second, practice tracing the letter in the correct order.
- Finally, practice creating the letter in the same order.
Use the activity pages to enhance learning.
- First, read the site words and sentence with your child. Have her circle the letter she is practicing in the site words and sentence.
- Second, help your child think of other words that begins with the letter. Then have your child draw another picture in the empty square that begins with the letter.
- Once your child learns to write all her letters, help her to write her name. Also help her to create the site words in the book and new words with the letter cards. Then have her write the words.
